Commitment is a 12 year old who has never missed a day of school. A child in Class 7, who has not missed a single day of school in the past 7 years. I cannot begin to imagine that. I do not know anyone who has not missed a single day of school, probably even in one year.
And at Gyaan Mandir, for the annual day, and 50th anniversary celebration, I saw six to seven children who had accomplished this mad feat. Over five years without a single day missing. Not for sickness. Nor weddings. Nor bereavement. Nor any other excuse.
It made me wonder how many kids had missed just one day? Or just a couple in that entire period. And where that commitment came from? It hardly matters. That commitment is a habit that will make these kids stand out today and wherever their journeys take them.
I often make excuses. Very valid ones at times. As do so many people around me. But these kids made me realise that 99% of the time, they can probably be overcome. If they can manage 5 to 7 years of school without skipping a day, I can definitely up my game…
